Ran the bat file in the DDATA folder, started the game and it worked, I could see gridlines. The compendium version of HoMM1 is a sort of combo install as it puts the dos data files in a DDATA folder and the Windows files in the regular DATA folder so I was editing the wrong one and wondering why nothing was changing lol. I figured out why it wasn't working with the DOS version. Okay it worked with the Windows version of HoMM1 in a XP VM, I can see grids however it's slow and the CD music doesn't work properly through the VM so I'd still prefer to get it working with the dos copy.
